Elton John Baby Halloween Costume
Somehow every year Halloween seems to creep up on me. Unlike Christmas where I always have my Christmas list and plans scheduled ahead of time, for Halloween the costumes, candy and decorations sneak up on me like a cruel ghost of irony.
Until this year.
Somehow this year I managed to get it together for my daughter. Although my costume was last minute, let's be real we all know it's about the kids anyway. About 6 weeks before Halloween something struck me, and I know Marina was going to be Elton John for Halloween.
Easy Toddler Elton John Costume for Halloween
Making this toddler Elton John Costume is much easier than it looks, as long as you plan a little ahead of time so that you can order any needed supplies. I bought the jacket to make my life easier, and then made the rest of the outfit with a glue gun and my sewing machine. However, if you can't sew then I'm sure you could look into toddler dance costumes or seventies outfits to find the under-portion of the look.
What you Need
-
-
- Faux Leather Jacket. Mine is from ILovePlum here
- Feathers. You can find white ones at any craft store
- Mardi Gras beads. Any party store will have these, but also my local fabric store had them by the yard in the trim section
- Baby Sunglasses
- Glue on Rhinestones
- E600 Glue
- Hot Glue
- 1/2 yard iridescent stretch fabric (always available in the fabric store this time of year)

To Make the Jacket
The Jacket is pretty self explanatory, but basically I just bought the jacket and glued on all of the accessories. I thought gluing the feathers was going to be tricky, but they were easy to place and glue with a hot glue gun, and they stayed put. The beads I just looped back and forth on themselves using the glue gun to affix. I wish I had bought more beads so that I could layer even more on this jacket, but as is, it was a lot for a tiny 19 month old!
To Make the Under Outfit
I traced a pair of Marina's pants, adding a bit of extra flare to both inner and outer edges. I wished I had added even more because the look would have been even more silly! I included an extra inch at the waist band so that I could fold over and pull a thin elastic through. Everything here was pretty thrown together; what I've realized with toddler costumes is that the more time you spend on it worse the outcome will be (Murphy's law basically) so find a way to make it quick and easy!
For the top I folded the remaining fabric in half, and on the fold of the fabric cut out a neck hole and arm holes, and then sewed up the sides. I eye-balled the shape of this because the fabric was so stretchy it didn't need to be precise. I made it long enough to tuck into the pants and thankfully everything stayed put and gave her mobility to run around all night long!
To Make the Sunglasses
No toddler Elton John Costume is complete without his signature tinted sunglasses. When I found these online I knew they would be perfect, and I used basic sequins from the craft store to pump them up the Elton level. I use the E6000 glue since its the strongest, and I always use a flat-end eyebrow tweezer when affixing rhinestones this small because it makes the whole process go quicker.
In the end, this costume was a RIOT and she received a ton of laughs. Although the sunglasses didn't stay on most of the night, they were still great for a few pictures. Marina loved the outfit so much we tried it on almost every day leading up to Halloween, and every day as soon as we put the jacket on she would dance around the living room in excitement. A win-win in my book!
